The Story
A goat herder Kaldi first discovered coffee
Kaldi noticed that after eating berries from a certain tree, his goats became so energetic that they did not want to sleep at night (the dancing goats)
Kaldi reported this to the abbot of the local monastery, who also found that it kept him alert through the long hours of evening prayer. The abbot shared his discovery with other monks, and the secret of the energizing berries began to spread.
As word moved east and coffee reached the Arabian peninsula, it began a journey across the globe.
Fast forward this to a century!

Masters of the Coffee Universe
35% of the coffee industry is controlled by a couple of corporates and a handful of traders
They are the Masters of the Coffee Universe.
With the sheer volume of their business, they dictate the prices and the terms of business.
This market concentration is not only a problem for speciality coffee brands, but also for growers who want to preserve and offer exotic coffees to discerning nature lovers.

Carbon Emissions
As per a recent study, a single cup of coffee has 0.209kg of CO2e.
The carbon footprint of 1 cup of coffee may not seem like a lot, but collectively, it all adds up. For example, drinking two cups daily for a year adds up to 153 kg CO2e.
With 2.25bn cups being taken every day, it amounts to 470,000 mt per day, in a year that is 172 million mt of CO2e.

Deforestation
Global coffee production is growing by 2% annually
A review of coffee land use change states that apart from Brazil, where production increases are driven by technology, in nearly all countries, deforestation is the primary source of new coffee lands.
Primary forest lost for new coffee production is well more than 100,000 ha yr -1.

The Millenials
The drinkers, especially millennials, are concerned about the environment
A majority of teenagers are convinced that humans are changing Earth’s climate and believe that it will cause harm to them personally and to other members of their generation.
Agriculture in its current form is one of the largest contributors of GHGs and forest loss.
This can only change when consumers demand to know the story of what they are consuming.
